On Tuesday night Greenwood Athletic hosted Jamestown United at Solo Street in a 7:30PM kickoff and true to form, Solo Street was quite windy which created a challenge for both sides.
Jamestown with the wind at their back in the first half had applied the pressure, forcing the home side to make mistakes in their own half.
In the 8th minute the visitors capitalized on a Greenwood error as the home side lost the ball in their box after trying to play out from a goal kick and Jamestown’s Darron Omaticus slotted the ball into the net over a gaping Kyle Martin, the opposition keeper.
As the half progressed, Greenwood slowly edged their way back into the game and got their equalizer when Shaun Sopio netted after the Jamestown goalkeeper, Mohamad Arendse, saved an initial shot from Nazier Jacobs.
Just before the halftime break the home side went ahead when Tevin Horne scored as he latched onto a freekick taken by Sopio.
The second half started like a house on fire as the Jamestown substitutions made their presence felt with Mikyle Adams and Moeneeb Bassier making an impact on the game. The visitors were soon on even terms when Omaticus equalized after the Greenwood defence were unable to clear from a freekick.
Adams, the pacey left winger from Jamestown, made easy work of getting behind the right hand side of the opponents’ backline and caused endless problems for Mark Nefdt and his defense as Adams also provided the assist for Omaticus to complete his hattrick and to take the lead 3-2.
Greenwood were never out of the game and with experienced players like Tevin Horne, Nathan Brown and Mark Nefdt on the pitch, they always gave themselves a chance and shortly after they went behind, Brown scored the equalizer.
Jamestown had a chance to take the lead again when Adams missed a golden opportunity as he head the ball passed an exposed net but the ball was so low that he might have done better if he had chosen to use his feet instead.
With chances presented for both sides late in the second half, it was Greenwood who got the break when they were awarded a freekick on the edge of the Jamsetown box and Shaun Sopio curled the ball passed the wall and into the left corner of the goals to give the home side the winning result of 4-3.
