Bluegum victorious at Home

On Saturday 17th Bluegum United hosted newly promoted side Trinitarians in the SAFA Regional Mens League at Bonteheuwel Sports Ground.

The scorching hot weather didn’t deter the 2 sides from playing at a high intensity and the home side quickly made their intentions felt in the 4th minute when Matthew Pelton delivered his corner and Yaseen Koopman had his header defended, much to relief of the visitor’s technical staff.

Trinitarians were facing a relentless period of attack by Bluegum and the fierce tackles exchanged between both sides forced the first substitution of the match for the visitors when, Lyle Johnson replaced Jeffrey Ruiters within 20 mins of the start. Bluegum had the ascendency in the first 20 mins of the match, looking sharper, quicker to the ball and more decisive in attack.

With the restart after the water break, the momentum shifted to the visitors as the forced change for Trinitarians also resulted in a positional change which saw experienced campaigner, Rubin Jacobs, shifted in the heart of the midfield. The result of this move had Trinnies more in possession and on attack for the rest of the first half. Although they struggled with the pitch, they held firm with moving the ball through the zones and creating chances like, when Ryan Paulse missed his opportunity to score as he headed the ball past the upright at the end of the half.

The second half started just as intense as the first when Bluegum substitute Chadwin Erickson received the ball from broken play in the Trinnies half, took the shot but it was saved and the visitors immediately countered but also missed their opportunity with the shot going wide.

The first goal of the match was scored by Bluegum’s Ishrafiel Lottery after the away side’s defence failed to deal with a free kick in the box. The home side doubled their lead when Asheeq Valentine found Matthew Pelton in the area and Pelton scored.
Trinitarians scored their 1st goal from a corner when Jason Warner took advantage of a sleepy Bluegum defence. The home side quickly struck back when Muazzam Esau delivered a good pass to Pelton on the edge of the opponents’ box, Pelton miskicked and William Rhode latched onto the loose ball and scored.

Trinnies, determined to get something from the match scored another just before time when substitute Charles Japhta scored his team’s second after goalkeeper Maselino Keet (Bluegum) saved an attempt by Jason Warner. Bluegum secured their first win of the season with this 3-2 win over Trinitarians.
